Rockstar has not published GTA 6’s file size. As of October 24, 2026, no Rockstar page, PlayStation Store listing or Xbox listing shows an install size. Press estimates run from 150GB to 250GB, so plan for 250GB of free space before preload opens on November 12.
The real number should appear on the storefronts on or before preload day. This page changes the moment it does.

How Big Will GTA 6 Be?
Every size you see today is an estimate. The reasoning behind the 150-200GB range is consistent across outlets:
- The map. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said in August that Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map, as Notebookcheck reported.
- The baseline. GTA 5 takes about 95GB on PS5 after years of updates. Red Dead Redemption 2 passed 100GB long ago.
- No disc. The boxed edition holds a code, not a disc, so Rockstar is not limited by a 100GB-class Blu-ray. Both digital and physical buyers download the same files.
Estimates now stretch from 150GB to nearly 300GB, according to IBTimes UK. The wide spread is the honest answer: nobody outside Rockstar knows.
The 200GB development build claim
A leaker claims the development build used in leaked clips exceeds 200GB. A development build is not a retail download. It usually carries uncompressed assets and tools that a shipped game does not. The final PS5 and Xbox package could come in smaller after compression, or larger after a day-one patch. We do not link to or describe leaked material.
GTA 6 File Size Numbers to Ignore
Three kinds of claims keep circulating. None are confirmed:
- Viral storage screenshots. Images claiming a PlayStation screen showed an exact figure (a Reddit post in September claimed 244.86GB) are not backed by any store listing. A 600GB image was widely judged to be fake.
- “Confirmed” size headlines on small sites. If the article does not point to a Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft page, treat the number as a guess.
- “GTA 6 ISO” or early-download files. There is no early download. These files are malware, and Rockstar has not released any build to the public.
If Rockstar publishes a size, it will show on the PlayStation Store and Xbox listing and in Rockstar’s support pages. Nowhere else counts as confirmation.
How Much Free Space Do You Need for GTA 6?
Start from usable storage, not the number on the box. Consoles reserve space for the system.
| Console | Approx. usable space | Fits 250GB plan? |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (launch model, 825GB) | ~667GB | Yes, but it takes over a third |
| PS5 Slim (1TB) | ~848GB | Yes |
| PS5 Pro (2TB) | ~1.8TB | Yes, no SSD needed |
| Xbox Series X (1TB) | ~802GB | Yes |
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | ~364GB | Yes, but little else fits |
If you can free 250GB by deleting games you are not playing, you do not need to buy anything. Add up your own library with the Storage Calculator. If you still fall short, our best PS5 SSD for GTA 6 guide covers which drive to buy and how to install it.
How Long Will the GTA 6 Download Take?
Download time depends on your real speed, not your advertised speed. This table uses a 0.9 efficiency factor, close to what console downloads reach on a healthy connection.
| Your speed | 150GB | 200GB | 250GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | ~15 hrs | ~20 hrs | ~25 hrs |
| 50 Mbps | ~7.4 hrs | ~9.9 hrs | ~12 hrs |
| 100 Mbps | ~3.7 hrs | ~4.9 hrs | ~6.2 hrs |
| 300 Mbps | ~1.2 hrs | ~1.6 hrs | ~2.1 hrs |
| 500 Mbps | ~44 min | ~59 min | ~1.2 hrs |
Preload gives you seven days. On a slow connection, start the minute it opens and leave the console in rest mode. Use our GTA 6 launch night planner to find the latest time you can start and still be ready at unlock.
When Can You Preload GTA 6?
Preload opens November 12, 2026, seven days before the November 19 launch. It is not early access. The files install on your console and stay locked until your regional unlock time.
- Digital buyers: preload appears in your library after a digital pre-order.
- Boxed buyers: physical copies ship and open for in-store pickup on November 12 so the code can start preload in time. Redeem the code to begin the download.
- Both editions: Standard and Ultimate download the same base game. Compare them in our Standard vs Ultimate guide.
Unlock times vary by region. Check yours in the GTA 6 unlock time planner.
How to Prepare Before November 12
- Check usable space on your console in Settings, then compare it with the 250GB plan above.
- Delete or archive games you have not touched in months. Cloud saves keep your progress.
- Use wired Ethernet if you can. At this size, dropouts add hours.
- Enable background downloads and rest mode so the console starts preload on its own.
- Update console software before preload day so you do not lose time on a system patch.
- Add storage only if you need it. An M.2 SSD is for players who want GTA 6 plus a full library. Start with the best PS5 SSD guide.
- Check the store listing on November 12. The exact size and any day-one patch show there first.
Does GTA 6 Need a PS5 Pro or More Storage?
No. GTA 6 launches on the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 Pro ships with 2TB, which helps with storage, but the CPU limit that caps frame rate is shared across PS5 models. Read our PS5 Pro vs PS5 breakdown and the full console comparison for GTA 6 before you spend. A full shopping list is in what you need to play GTA 6.
Is GTA 6 Coming to PC, and How Big Would It Be?
No PC version is confirmed, so there is no PC file size. See why GTA 6 has no PC release date and our system requirements page. Any “GTA 6 PC requirements” table you see is a projection.
When Will the Real GTA 6 File Size Appear?
On or before November 12. Rockstar has to submit the package to Sony and Microsoft before preload opens, so the storefront listing should show the install size by preload day at the latest. We will update the table at the top of this page the day it appears.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is GTA 6 in GB?
Not confirmed. Estimates put the base install at 150-200GB, with a possible 20-50GB day-one patch. Plan for 250GB free.
How many GB do I need to preload GTA 6?
Free at least 250GB until the official size is published. Preload opens on November 12, 2026.
Is the GTA 6 physical copy smaller or different from the digital one?
No. The boxed edition contains a download code, not a disc. It installs the same files as the digital version.
Will GTA 6 fit on a PS5 with 825GB?
Yes. A launch PS5 has about 667GB usable, so a 250GB install fits. It will take over a third of the drive.
Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?
Yes, but the Series S has about 364GB usable. After GTA 6, little room is left for other large games.
Can I preload GTA 6 early?
No. Preload opens on November 12, 2026, for digital pre-orders and for boxed codes once redeemed.
Is there a GTA 6 file size for PC?
No. A PC version has not been confirmed, so no PC size exists.
Where will the official GTA 6 file size be published?
On the PlayStation Store and Xbox listings, and in Rockstar’s support pages, on or before preload day.
