GTA 6 on PS5 vs PS5 Pro vs Xbox Series X|S: Where to Play

For most players, the best console for GTA 6 is a standard PS5 or an Xbox Series X. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told preview creators that GTA 6 currently runs at 30fps on consoles, and no 60fps mode is confirmed. That means the PS5 Pro’s extra power doesn’t buy a higher frame rate right now. The Xbox Series S is the one to think twice about, because of storage.

If you already own any of these consoles, you don’t need to upgrade to play GTA 6 on November 19.

Does GTA 6 Run Better on Any Console?

At launch, GTA 6 targets 30fps on every console, including the PS5 Pro. The practical differences are resolution, image quality, and storage, not frame rate.

The 30fps detail comes from Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North. He told creators at the late-August previews that console builds were running at 30fps during development. He didn’t rule out a 60fps mode later. He said the technical team would need to answer that.

Digital Foundry’s analysis of the Extended Look, captured on a base PS5, reported a mostly locked 30fps with ray-traced reflections and global illumination. So the base PS5 isn’t a compromised version.

PS5: The Default Pick

The standard PS5 is where Rockstar showed GTA 6, and it’s the platform most of the marketing runs on, from Sony’s GTA 6 DualSense controllers to PS5-branded billboards. Performance matches the Xbox Series X for practical purposes.

The Digital Edition is the better value for GTA 6. The physical copy is a code in a box with no disc, so a disc drive does nothing for this game. Add a 1TB SSD if your library is big. Our PS5 SSD guide covers that.

PS5 Pro: Worth It for GTA 6?

The PS5 Pro’s upgrades are GPU power and PSSR upscaling. Its CPU is only a modest step up from the base PS5. Open-world simulation like GTA 6’s tends to be CPU-bound, which is why analysts don’t expect the Pro to double the frame rate.

GTA 6 has been reported as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but Rockstar hasn’t detailed what the Pro adds. Sharper image quality or better ray tracing are the likely gains, not smoothness. At $899.99, buy it for its 2TB storage and long-term headroom, not for GTA 6 alone. Our PS5 Pro vs PS5 breakdown runs the full upgrade math.

Storage is the setup step most likely to block launch night. Here’s what to buy, and what to skip, before November 19. Best PS5 Accessories for GTA 6

Xbox Series X: The Equal Alternative

The Series X matches the PS5 closely in raw performance and gets the same 30fps target. After Microsoft’s August 1 price increase, it costs $799.99 for the disc model, more than a PS5, which removes its old value edge.

Xbox Series S: The One to Think Twice About

The 512GB Series S has only about 364GB usable. With GTA 6 estimated at 150–200GB before any patch, it would take more than half the console. That’s the main problem, more than performance.

It’s reported to run GTA 6 at 30fps like the other consoles, but at a lower resolution. It will play GTA 6, but plan on an expansion card or on uninstalling most other games. The 1TB Series S ($599.99) eases the storage problem but costs the same as a PS5 Digital.
