What Do You Need to Play GTA 6?

Can you play GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?

No. GTA 6 is a current-generation release. PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One and Xbox One X cannot run it, and Rockstar has not announced a last-gen version. If you own one of these, you need a new console before launch.

What is the cheapest console for GTA 6?

The Xbox Series S is the cheapest machine that plays it. The trade-off is storage. Its usable space is roughly 364GB, and a GTA 6 install estimated at 150-250GB takes most of that. Budget for an expansion card if you keep more than one or two big games installed.

GTA 6’s boxed edition is a download code with no disc, so the Series S’s missing disc drive no longer rules it out for this game. Check the Storage Calculator to see how much room your library leaves, and read our console comparison for GTA 6 before you buy.

PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition?

For GTA 6, the choice does not matter. Both have identical performance, and both download the same game because the boxed copy has no disc. In the US, the Digital Edition was $599.99 and the Disc Edition $649.99 as of August 2026, so check the Price Tracker for today’s gap.

Buy the Disc Edition only if you will buy other games on disc, trade games in, or borrow them. If GTA 6 is your main reason to upgrade, the Digital Edition saves money with no downside for this game. Wondering about the Pro? Read PS5 Pro vs PS5 for GTA 6.

Do you need a 4K TV for GTA 6?

No. GTA 6 runs on a 1080p television. A 4K set gives you a sharper image, but it is not a requirement and it is the most expensive line item you can safely skip. Spend on storage before you spend on a screen.

How much storage does GTA 6 need?

Rockstar has not confirmed the install size. Estimates put it at 150-200GB, plus a possible 20-50GB day-one patch, so plan for 250GB free. Usable space out of the box is roughly 667GB on the launch PS5, 848GB on the PS5 Slim, 802GB on Xbox Series X and 364GB on Xbox Series S. Only the Series S is genuinely tight. Details and download times are in our GTA 6 file size guide. If you need more room, see the best PS5 SSD for GTA 6.

Standard or Ultimate edition?

Standard is the complete single-player game at $79.99. Ultimate adds 16 exclusive vehicles, weapons, shops and activities for $99.99, about 25% more. Every digital pre-order, in either edition, includes one month of GTA+ and the Vintage Vice City Pack if bought before November 20. If you do not need the extra shops and vehicles on day one, Standard is the sensible purchase, and you can upgrade later. Full breakdown: Standard vs Ultimate Edition.
