To play GTA 5 Online in 2026, you need a copy of GTA 5 and a Rockstar Games account. Then launch Online from the main menu. On PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC Enhanced, a new character gets GTA$4,000,000 through the Career Builder. That grant is the single biggest head start a new player can get.

Timing matters too. Take-Two confirmed on September 17 that GTA Online keeps running after GTA 6 launches on November 19, so progress you build now isn’t wasted.

Do You Need to Pay for GTA Online?

GTA Online isn’t a separate purchase. It’s the multiplayer mode included with GTA 5.

If you own GTA 5 on your platform, you already have GTA Online. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, it’s also included with Rockstar’s GTA+ subscription.

Console players need an active PlayStation Plus membership or an Xbox Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer. That’s a platform requirement, not a Rockstar one. PC players don’t need a subscription.

Enhanced or Legacy: Pick the Right Version First

If you own a current-gen console, create your character there. Enhanced also loads much faster from the SSD, which adds up over hundreds of mission restarts.

How the Career Builder Works

The Career Builder is a one-time setup that gives a new Enhanced character GTA$4,000,000 to build a starting business.

You must spend at least GTA$3,000,000 of the grant before entering free roam. It has to cover at least one property, one vehicle, and one weapon. Any unspent money carries over, capped at GTA$1,000,000.

It runs once per account, at character creation. Deleting the character doesn’t give you a second run. Returning players can use one of their two character slots to access it, without touching an existing character.

Treat the Career Builder as a business decision, not a shopping spree. A fast car bought here earns nothing. A property that produces income pays for every car you’ll want later.

Which Career Builder Path Should You Pick?

You choose one of four paths. Each one bundles a different business.

Your First Session: What to Do in Order

Play the opening in this order:

1. Finish the tutorial. It covers buying a weapon, stealing a car, and starting jobs, and it pays your first RP and cash.
2. Switch to an Invite Only session. Public lobbies are full of veteran players with weaponized vehicles. Invite Only lets you learn menus and missions without getting ambushed.
3. Run contact missions. Jobs from early contacts like Lamar and Gerald teach the map and pay steady early cash.
4. Play the First Dose missions. These free missions from the Los Santos Drug Wars update unlock the Acid Lab, a business you don’t have to buy outright.
5. Register as a VIP once you have GTA$50,000 in the bank. That opens VIP Work, a far better earner than solo freemode.

After that, the usual long-term goal is the Kosatka submarine, which unlocks the Cayo Perico heist, one of the best solo earners in the game.

Early Money Mistakes to Avoid

Most new players go broke the same ways:

• Buying a supercar before owning an income business
• Buying businesses that only pay off when stacked (like the Nightclub) with nothing to feed them
• Buying Shark Cards before learning how weekly bonuses work
• Grinding solo in public lobbies, where one griefer can wipe out a sale

Rockstar rotates weekly bonuses (double money on set activities, discounts, free vehicles), so check the weekly update before choosing what to grind. A 2x or 3x payout on a mission you’d play anyway beats almost any other early strategy.

Will GTA Online Keep Running After GTA 6?

Yes. At Take-Two’s September 17 shareholder meeting, CEO Strauss Zelnick said GTA Online continues after GTA 6 launches.

GTA 6’s own online mode doesn’t have a date. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said on September 17 that he expects it in 2027, based on conversations with Rockstar. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed that timing.

Rockstar also hasn’t said whether GTA Online characters, money, or vehicles carry over to GTA 6’s online mode. Don’t grind now on the assumption that your progress transfers.
