From GTA 5 To GTA 6: How Much Rockstar's World Has Changed

GTA 5 released in September 2013. GTA 6 arrives November 19, 2026 — a 13-year gap, the longest between mainline entries in the franchise's history. Here's what that gap actually bought.

One Protagonist Model Becomes Two

GTA 5 ran three playable protagonists (Michael, Franklin, Trevor) with switchable perspectives. GTA 6 narrows to two, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, but builds the entire narrative around their relationship rather than three separate arcs.

Los Santos Becomes Leonida

GTA 5's Los Santos was Rockstar's Los Angeles. GTA 6 rebuilds Vice City — last seen in 2002's Vice City — inside a larger fictional Florida state Rockstar calls its most detailed map yet.

One Generation Becomes Two

GTA 5 spanned Xbox 360/PS3 through Xbox One/PS4 — three console generations across its life. GTA 6 launches as a clean current-gen exclusive on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no last-gen version at all.

What Hasn't Changed

The $10 price increase aside ($79.99 vs GTA 5's $59.99 launch price), Rockstar's basic formula — open world, dark comedy, dual protagonists in crime — is still the foundation. See our Story & Characters page for what's confirmed about Lucia and Jason.
